Why Esther Matters

Esther is one of the wildest stories in the Bible. It has a king who parties too hard, a queen who refuses to be displayed like royal furniture, a beauty contest to find her replacement, a hidden Jewish orphan who becomes queen, and a government official who decides one man’s insult is reason enough to kill an entire people.

The story takes place in the Persian Empire, long after Babylon destroyed Jerusalem and forced many Jewish survivors into exile. Persia later defeated Babylon and allowed Jews to return home, but many stayed scattered across the empire. Esther’s story is about those Jews—the ones living far from Jerusalem, trying to survive in foreign cities under foreign rulers.

Esther becomes queen of Persia, but she keeps her Jewish identity hidden. Her cousin Mordecai refuses to bow to Haman, one of the king’s highest officials. Haman’s ego cannot handle the insult, so he talks the king into approving a decree that will allow enemies of the Jews to kill them on a set day.

That makes Esther’s position dangerous. She has access to the king, but even a queen can be killed for approaching him without permission. Mordecai pushes her to act anyway, warning that silence will not keep her safe forever.

The story turns when Esther risks her life, exposes Haman’s plot, and asks the king to save her people. The first decree cannot be canceled, so a second decree allows Jews throughout the empire to defend themselves. By the end, Haman is dead, Mordecai has risen to power, and the Jewish people survive the massacre planned against them.

Esther is also the story behind Purim, the Jewish holiday celebrating survival, reversal, courage, and a genocide that did not happen. God is never directly named in the book, which makes Esther unusual. But the story keeps asking readers to notice timing, courage, hidden identity, and the possibility that rescue may come through ordinary people placed in extraordinary danger.
