Description

Ptolemies, Seleucids, and Daniel’s Prophecy

Daniel 11 describes a complicated series of conflicts between northern and southern powers after the death of Alexander the Great. Those powers are commonly connected with the Seleucid rulers of the north and the Ptolemaic rulers of Egypt.

The Ptolemies controlled Egypt from Alexandria, while the Seleucids ruled a vast region stretching from Syria across much of the former Persian world. Between them lay Judea, the narrow land bridge connecting Africa, Asia, and the eastern Mediterranean.

That location placed the Jewish people directly between two ambitious kingdoms. As the Ptolemies and Seleucids fought for control, Judea changed hands and became caught in the political and military struggles Daniel had described.

The conflict eventually led to Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the Seleucid ruler remembered for trying to erase Jewish worship and force Greek religious practices on the people of Judea.
