Paul Kept Moving But Trouble Followed

Paul left Philippi with a back bruised from a public beating and city officials asking him to leave. He then started a roughly 95-mile walk to Thessalonica, passing through Amphipolis and Apollonia—only to face another angry crowd when he arrived. This 3D map follows that hard road and shows how quickly Paul’s journey moved from one dangerous city to the next.

Description

Released from prison, Paul walks 150 kilometers (95 miles)

Paul came to Macedonia after a nighttime vision convinced him that God was sending him across the Aegean Sea. He landed at Neapolis and walked about 10 miles inland to Philippi. There he met Lydia, a merchant who sold expensive purple cloth. She believed Paul’s message about Jesus and opened her home to him and his companions.

Paul’s work in Philippi soon made enemies. He freed an enslaved young woman from a spirit her owners had used to make money through fortune-telling. The owners retaliated. Local officials had Paul and Silas beaten, jailed, and locked in stocks. An earthquake opened the prison that night, but the prisoners stayed. The astonished jailer and his household became believers.

By morning, Philippi’s officials wanted the missionaries gone. Paul first made them admit that they had illegally beaten Roman citizens. He then left the city and followed the Via Egnatia west. Acts names Amphipolis and Apollonia along the roughly 95-mile route to Thessalonica. The walk would have taken several days, and Paul began it with fresh wounds from the beating.

In Thessalonica, Paul again found people ready to listen—and opponents ready to stop him. A mob attacked the home of a local believer named Jason, where they expected to find Paul. Other believers helped Paul and Silas leave the city that night.

This 3D relief map turns that fast-moving account into a journey readers can follow, showing Neapolis, Philippi, Amphipolis, Apollonia, and Thessalonica across the landscape of northern Greece.
