Paul Goes to Greece: Thessalonica to Corinth

Paul Takes the Gospel to Europe

Paul crossed the sea into Europe with no idea how far his message would travel. He preached in Philippi, stirred up Thessalonica, slipped away to Berea, debated thinkers in Athens, and finally reached Corinth. This map puts that remarkable journey on the ground—and shows just how much traveling was packed into a few chapters of Acts.

Description

From Thessalonica to Corinth: Paul’s Journey Through Greece

Paul’s trip into Europe began with a nighttime vision. According to Acts, he saw a man from Macedonia pleading, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” Paul took that as his invitation to cross the Aegean Sea and bring the Christian message into a new part of the Roman world.

This map follows Paul and his companions from Troas, on the coast of what is now Turkey, across the sea to Neapolis and Philippi. From there they traveled west through Amphipolis and Apollonia to Thessalonica.

Thessalonica became one of the important early Christian communities—and one Paul would later write to in the letters we know as 1 and 2 Thessalonians. But his preaching also provoked opposition. Paul moved on to Berea, then headed south to Athens, where Acts describes his famous encounter with the city’s philosophers and religious thinkers.

His journey eventually took him to Corinth, one of the busiest commercial cities in Greece and another place that would become enormously important in Paul’s ministry.

The map compares the geography of the journey by land and sea, showing a trip of roughly 400 miles (645 km) mainly by sea or 300 miles (480 km) by land between Thessalonica and Corinth. It also places Macedonia and Achaia in their wider Mediterranean setting.

Use this map while reading Acts 16–18, studying Paul’s missionary journeys, or teaching about Philippians, Thessalonians, and Corinthians.
