The Revolt That Saved Judaism
A foreign king tried to erase the Jewish faith. Instead, he sparked a rebellion that changed Jewish history forever.
The Maccabean Revolt began when Antiochus IV Epiphanes outlawed key Jewish practices and desecrated Jerusalem’s temple. What followed was a remarkable struggle that led to Jewish independence and the birth of the Hasmonean Kingdom.
Description
The Maccabean Revolt
During the second century BC, Judea was controlled by the Seleucid Empire, one of the kingdoms that emerged after Alexander the Great's empire broke apart. Hoping to unify his realm, Antiochus IV attempted to force Greek customs and religion on the Jewish people.
The crisis reached its peak when Jewish worship was suppressed and the temple in Jerusalem was defiled. In response, a priestly family led by Mattathias and his son Judah Maccabee launched a revolt against Seleucid rule.
Though greatly outnumbered, the rebels used knowledge of the land and guerrilla tactics to defeat larger armies. Their victories eventually led to the liberation of Jerusalem and the rededication of the temple, an event commemorated each year during Hanukkah.
In the decades that followed, the Hasmonean rulers expanded Jewish territory and established an independent kingdom that lasted until the arrival of Roman power.
Why Daniel Matters
Many Bible scholars connect Antiochus IV Epiphanes with prophecies in Daniel, especially chapters 8 and 11. His persecution of the Jewish people and desecration of the temple closely resemble events Daniel predicted centuries earlier.
Because of this, Antiochus is often viewed as a historical foreshadowing of later enemies of God's people described in biblical prophecy.
