Judean Hills, Jesus went up to Jerusalem

Why Jesus Went “Up” to Jerusalem

When the Bible says Jesus went up to Jerusalem, it does not simply mean he traveled north.

Jerusalem sits high on the central ridge of the land, so travelers from Galilee, Jericho, the Jordan Valley, and the Dead Sea region literally climbed uphill to reach the city.

Description

Jerusalem on the Ridge

Jesus went up to Jerusalem for the Passover, according to the writer of John's Gospel (John 2:13). That phrase can sound strange to modern readers because Jerusalem is not always north of the places people traveled from. In the Bible, going “up” to Jerusalem often means going uphill.

Jerusalem stands in the Judean hills, high above the Jordan River Valley and the Dead Sea. Travelers coming from Jericho, the Dead Sea region, or the Jordan Valley had to climb a steep rise to reach the city. Even people coming from Galilee eventually ascended into the hill country as they approached Jerusalem.

This geography helps explain many Bible passages that speak of going up to Jerusalem or going down from Jerusalem. The language reflects the land itself: coastal plains, valleys, foothills, ridges, plateaus, and deep drops toward the Dead Sea.

This map gives readers a visual sense of the elevations across the land of Israel and the Palestinian territories, showing why Jerusalem functioned as a high-place city both geographically and spiritually in the biblical story.
