Israel After Exile: The Province of Yehud
$10.00
Israel Without a Kingdom
When Jewish exiles returned home in the 500s and 400s BC, they found a land without the independent kingdom they once knew. Instead, they lived in Yehud, a small Persian province surrounded by larger regions and neighboring peoples.
Description
Life in Yehud After the Exile
The Babylonian exile changed Israel’s political map. When Jewish communities began returning to Jerusalem and the surrounding region, they did not restore the old kingdom of Judah. They lived as a province within the Persian Empire, commonly known as Yehud, while Jerusalem remained an important center for the returning community.
The geography shows just how small this restored Jewish homeland was. Jerusalem and Bethel sat within Yehud, with Samaria to the north, Ammon and Moab across the Jordan River, and Idumea to the south. Important places such as Hebron, Beersheba, and the coastal cities of Joppa and Ashdod help show the surrounding territory and the neighbors who shaped life after the exile.
This map helps put the books and stories of the post-exilic period into perspective. Israel had returned to its homeland, but it was no longer a powerful independent kingdom. The people had to rebuild their community, restore Jerusalem, and live faithfully while under foreign rule. That tension between returning home and living without national independence shaped much of Jewish history after the exile.
