The Gibeonites Trick Joshua
The story of the Gibeonites is one of the more surprising moments in Israel’s conquest of Canaan. After the Israelites captured Jericho and Ai, the people of Gibeon feared they would be next. Instead of fighting Israel, they disguised themselves as travelers from a faraway land and asked Joshua to make a peace treaty with them.
The map shows the rugged terrain of central Canaan and the roughly 16-mile route from Gilgal to Gibeon, passing through places such as Jericho, Beeroth, Kiriath-jearim, Chephirah, and Beth-horon. Once Joshua discovered that the Gibeonites had actually lived nearby, it was too late—the treaty had already been made. This geography helps show how close Gibeon was to the areas Israel was conquering and why the Gibeonites’ deception mattered.
