Description

The Road to Emmaus

One of the best-known stories in Luke’s final chapter follows two disciples walking from Jerusalem to a village called Emmaus on the very day Jesus rose from the dead. Along the way, the risen Jesus joined them, though they did not recognize him at first.

Luke gives readers one crucial clue: Emmaus was about seven miles from Jerusalem. That detail has led Bible readers and historians to search for the village ever since. Several sites have been proposed, but no location has been identified with complete certainty.

That uncertainty makes geography especially important here. This map helps readers visualize the area around Jerusalem and see the radius in which Emmaus may have been located. It turns a familiar Bible story into a real journey through the hill country of Judea.

The story reaches its turning point when the travelers invite Jesus to stay with them. At the meal, he breaks bread, their eyes are opened, and they realize they have been walking with the risen Lord. Then they rush back to Jerusalem with the news.
