Description

The Final Night and Morning:

Jesus’ Path Through Jerusalem

The crucifixion of Jesus didn’t begin at the cross. It unfolded across Jerusalem in a tense, exhausting sequence of movements—back and forth through the city, from private homes to political power centers, and finally outside the walls to a place of execution. This map pulls those moments together and anchors them to real locations on the ground.

After his arrest, Jesus was first taken to the home of Caiaphas, where Jewish leaders questioned him in the middle of the night. From there, as dawn approached, he was sent to Roman authority—likely connected to the Antonia Fortress, overlooking the Temple Mount. This was where Roman troops were stationed and where Pontius Pilate would have interrogated him during Passover.

Mocked, beaten, and condemned, Jesus was then led out of the city. Roman executions took place in public view, along major roads. The destination was Golgotha, meaning “Place of the Skull.” It lay outside the city walls, visible to travelers and pilgrims entering Jerusalem.

This map shows how tightly packed these locations were—and how physically demanding that final night and morning must have been. Jesus was moved repeatedly through crowded streets, up and down Jerusalem’s ridges, before reaching the cross. Geography doesn’t just set the scene here; it deepens the cost.
