The crucifixion of Jesus didn’t begin at the cross. It unfolded across Jerusalem in a tense, exhausting sequence of movements—back and forth through the city, from private homes to political power centers, and finally outside the walls to a place of execution. After his arrest, Jesus was first taken to the home of Caiaphas, where Jewish leaders questioned him in the middle of the night. From there, as dawn approached, he was sent to Roman authority—likely connected to the Antonia Fortress, overlooking the Temple Mount. Mocked, beaten, and condemned, Jesus was then led out of the city. Roman executions took place in public view, along major roads. The destination was Golgotha, meaning “Place of the Skull.” It lay outside the city walls, visible to travelers and pilgrims entering Jerusalem.
