The Prophets Who Spoke Through a Changing World

The prophets of the Old Testament did not all live at the same time or face the same crisis. Hosea and Amos spoke during the 700s BC as Assyria threatened Israel, while Micah, Isaiah, and others warned Judah about coming judgment. Later, prophets such as Jeremiah and Habakkuk lived through the rise of Babylon, the destruction of Jerusalem, and the exile of many Jews.

The geography helps make their messages easier to understand. Israel occupied the northern part of the land, while Judah lay to the south. Assyria dominated the region before Babylon rose to power, and Edom occupied territory southeast of Judah. After Jerusalem fell in 586 BC, prophets such as Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi spoke to people living in the aftermath of exile and during the rebuilding of the Jewish community.

The dates on the map also show how the prophetic books fit together. Most of the prophets can be connected to a particular period of Israel's history, while Joel's date and location remain uncertain. Seeing the prophets alongside Israel, Judah, Assyria, Babylon, and Edom gives helpful context for understanding why they preached messages of warning, judgment, hope, and restoration.
