Family Ties, But It’s Complicated

Edom and Judah were “family nations,” descended from twin brothers—Esau for Edom and Jacob for Israel. You’d think that shared ancestry might lead to cooperation, but instead their relationship stayed tense for centuries. Edom controlled important trade routes south of the Dead Sea, which gave it both value and leverage. To Judah, Edom was the neighbor you had to watch.

Early Clashes

The trouble started early. When Israel came out of Egypt and asked to travel through Edom’s land, Edom refused and showed force to back up the answer. Later, during the time of the kings, Judah managed to dominate Edom for a while—David even placed garrisons there. But the resentment never disappeared. As soon as Judah weakened, Edom broke away and reasserted its independence.

Betrayal at Jerusalem

The deepest wound came centuries later. When Babylon attacked Judah, Edom didn’t help. According to the biblical writers, Edom either supported Babylon or celebrated Judah’s downfall. That betrayal left lasting bitterness and brought sharp prophetic warnings, especially in the book of Obadiah.

Troubled Legacy

Even when there wasn’t open fighting, mistrust shaped nearly every interaction. Geography, trade competition, and old grudges kept the two on edge. By the time of the exile and beyond, Edom (later called Idumea) was absorbed by larger empires—but Judah remembered the pain. Their story shows how family ties can be overshadowed by rivalry, opportunity, and the sting of betrayal.
