Description

Ruth’s Journey to Bethlehem

The book of Ruth begins with tragedy, but it soon becomes a story about loyalty, family, and a new beginning. After the deaths of their husbands, Ruth and Naomi traveled back to Bethlehem, Naomi’s hometown. Ruth famously promised to stay with Naomi and make Naomi’s people and God her own.

This map highlights Bethlehem in the Judean hills and shows its location in relation to Jerusalem. The two towns are only about 6 miles (9 km) apart, making the geography of this region especially important to understanding the biblical story. Bethlehem would later become known as the hometown of King David and, centuries later, as the birthplace of Jesus.

For Ruth, Bethlehem became her adopted home and the place where her story took a dramatic turn. Her marriage to Boaz connected her to the family line of David, making this small town an important location in the larger story of the Bible.
