Description

The Prophet Who Could Not Curse Israel

Numbers 22 introduces Balaam, a prophet living far from Israel. When King Balak of Moab saw the Israelites camped near his territory, he feared they would overwhelm his kingdom. Instead of preparing only for battle, Balak sent messengers to hire Balaam to pronounce a curse on Israel.

Balaam agreed to make the journey, but God had other plans. Along the way, Balaam's donkey saw an angel blocking the road and refused to continue. The strange encounter became one of the most memorable episodes in the Old Testament and reminded Balaam that he could speak only the words God allowed.

The geography helps explain the story's setting. Balaam traveled from his homeland near the Euphrates River to the plains of Moab east of the Jordan River. The long journey covered hundreds of miles across the ancient Near East, showing how seriously Balak viewed the threat posed by Israel.

Understanding Balaam's route helps readers connect the biblical account to real locations. The map illustrates the distance traveled, the political landscape of the region, and the events leading to Balaam's famous blessings of Israel instead of the curses Balak desired.
