Description

The End of Assyria's Rule

For more than two centuries, Assyria controlled much of the ancient world. Its armies conquered nations, destroyed cities, and spread fear throughout the Middle East. But by the late seventh century BC, the empire began to crumble under attacks from its enemies.

The fall of Nineveh in 612 BC marked the beginning of the end. Assyrian survivors regrouped at Haran, but Babylonian forces continued their advance. When Egypt joined the struggle in an attempt to save Assyria, the conflict culminated at Carchemish in 605 BC.

There, the Babylonian army led by Nebuchadnezzar defeated Egypt and eliminated the last serious challenge to Babylon's authority. The victory changed the balance of power across the region and established Babylon as the world's leading empire.

Soon afterward, Babylon turned its attention toward Judah and Jerusalem, bringing the kingdom directly into the path of the empire that would eventually destroy the temple and carry many Jews into exile.
