Description

Israel’s Battle With Amalek

After leaving Egypt, the Israelites traveled through the wilderness toward Mount Sinai. Their journey included difficult stops along the way, including the possible locations of Marah and Elim. Eventually, they reached Rephidim, where Exodus 17:8 says the Amalekites came and fought against Israel.

This map shows a possible route from Goshen and the Nile River Delta through the wilderness toward Mount Sinai. It identifies the Reed Sea, Shur Desert, Marah, Elim, Rephidim, and other places along the proposed route. Several locations have question marks because their exact historical locations are uncertain.

Rephidim became significant because of the attack by Amalek. Exodus 17 describes the Israelites’ battle with the Amalekites, while Moses remained connected with the leadership of the battle from a nearby elevated position. The event became part of Israel’s collective memory.

The map also connects the story with Deuteronomy 25:17, where Moses later reminded the Israelites to remember what Amalek had done to them after they came out of Egypt. This shows that the event at Rephidim continued to matter to Israel long after the original battle.

The surrounding geography helps explain the setting. The route passes through dry desert regions between Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula, with the Gulf of Suez and Gulf of Aqaba visible on either side of the Sinai region. Mount Sinai appears near the center of the route, marking the destination toward which the Israelites were traveling.
