Daniel’s Vision Beside the Ulai River
Daniel saw himself in Susa, standing beside the Ulai River, when God gave him a vision of empires colliding.
A powerful ram, a charging goat, and a terrifying little horn revealed dangerous days ahead for God’s people.
Description
Vision at Susa
Daniel 8 opens with the prophet seeing himself in Susa, one of the great cities of the ancient world. There, beside the Ulai River, he received a vision filled with strange animals and violent conflict.
Daniel saw a two-horned ram charging west, north, and south. Then a male goat came from the west with such speed that it seemed to fly across the earth. The goat struck the ram, shattered its horns, and trampled it.
The vision pointed to the rise and fall of empires. The ram represented the Medo-Persian Empire, while the goat represented Greece. The great horn of the goat is often understood as Alexander the Great, whose empire spread with astonishing speed before breaking apart after his death.
Daniel’s vision did not stop with military conquest. It also warned of a later ruler who would attack God’s people, interfere with temple worship, and bring suffering to the faithful. That part of the vision became especially important for understanding the crisis that later came under Antiochus IV Epiphanes.
