Description

The Ark That No One Could Keep

After defeating Israel in battle, the Philistines captured the Ark of the Covenant and carried it to Ashdod, placing it in the temple of their god Dagon. But instead of proving Dagon's power, the Ark became a source of fear. Dagon's statue fell before the Ark, and the people were struck with painful afflictions.

The Philistines moved the Ark from Ashdod to Gath, hoping the trouble would end. It didn't. The same disasters followed, so they sent it to Ekron. By then, panic spread throughout Philistine territory because every city that received the Ark experienced suffering. Finally, after seven months, the Philistine leaders loaded the Ark onto a cart pulled by two cows and sent it back toward Israel with gifts acknowledging God's power.

Following the Ark's route from city to city helps readers understand that God's presence could not be controlled by any nation. The geography shows the five major Philistine cities and explains how what began as a military triumph became an unforgettable lesson about the holiness and authority of Israel's God.
