Revelation 16 describes the seventh and final bowl of God’s judgment. The earth convulses, cities collapse, and the great city splits into three parts. God then remembers Babylon and holds it accountable for its evil.
Many readers associate Revelation’s Babylon with Rome, the empire that dominated the world in which John lived. This map sets John’s vision beside a remarkable development in Roman history. About 200 years after Revelation was written, Emperor Diocletian divided responsibility for governing the Roman Empire among four emperors.
Four Emperors Governing One Vast Empire
The arrangement, established in AD 293, became known as the Tetrarchy. Diocletian and Maximian served as senior emperors. Galerius and Constantius served as junior emperors, each responsible for a different part of the empire.
The map uses four colors to identify the districts governed by Constantius, Maximian, Galerius, and Diocletian. Their territories stretch from Britain and the Atlantic coast across Europe and the Mediterranean world to Egypt, Syria, and the border of the Parthian Empire.
Portraits of the four rulers help put faces to the names. The map gives Bible students a dramatic way to compare Revelation’s image of a collapsing world power with the later division of the Roman Empire.
