Roman Empire in the time of Jesus

Description

Paul’s World: The Roman Empire in the Time of Christ

Understanding the power behind the New Testament story

When Jesus spoke about soldiers, authority, and going the extra mile, he wasn’t speaking in metaphors. He was describing life under Rome. This map places the story of the Gospels inside the vast reach of the Roman Empire, showing just how far Roman power extended—and how close it felt to everyday people.

From Britain to North Africa, from Spain to the eastern provinces, Rome controlled trade, travel, law, and military force. Its soldiers enforced order, collected taxes, and could legally compel civilians to carry their gear. What sounds like a simple teaching in the Sermon on the Mount becomes something sharper when you see the system behind it.

This map helps you visualize that world. It connects Jesus’ words to the empire that shaped them, revealing the tension between Rome’s rule by force and the Kingdom of God Jesus described—a kingdom built on humility, mercy, and unexpected strength.

Seeing the scale of Rome makes the message of the Gospels clearer, more grounded, and far more radical.
