Description

A Portable Altar for Incense

The Bible describes a small altar made from acacia wood and covered with gold for burning incense. Unlike the large bronze altar where animal sacrifices were offered, this altar had a different purpose. It stood inside the Holy Place, close to the curtain that separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.
The priests were instructed to burn specially prepared incense on the altar. Aaron and the priests who followed him cared for it as part of their regular duties. The fragrant smoke rising from the altar would have been a familiar part of worship inside the tabernacle.
The altar was also built to travel. It had rings and poles so the Israelites could carry it when the tabernacle was packed up and moved to a new location. This was important because the tabernacle was designed to accompany the Israelites during their journey through the wilderness.
The incense altar became closely associated with prayer and worship. Later biblical passages use the image of incense rising before God as a picture of prayers offered to Him. This makes the altar more than just a piece of tabernacle furniture—it helps illustrate how the Israelites understood worship and approaching God.
