Philippi in Macedonia

Paul takes the story of Jesus to Europe
Paul crossed the Aegean Sea carrying a new message into a new part of the world, to what is now Europe. He landed at Neapolis, followed the Via Egnatia through the mountains, and reached Philippi eight miles inland. What happened next changed lives, shook open a prison, and planted one of Paul’s most beloved churches.
Description
Paul brings the gospel to Macedonia
Paul had planned to preach in Asia, but his journey took an unexpected turn. In a nighttime vision, he saw a man from Macedonia pleading, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.” Paul and his companions crossed the Aegean Sea and landed at Neapolis, the port that served Philippi.
From there, they followed the Via Egnatia, one of the Roman Empire’s great highways. The road carried them about eight miles, or 13 kilometers, inland through the rugged hills of northern Greece. Their destination was Philippi, an important Roman colony filled with retired soldiers, merchants, travelers, and government officials.
A church begins beside a river
Paul did not find a synagogue in Philippi. Instead, he met a group of women praying beside a river outside the city. Lydia, a prosperous cloth merchant, listened to Paul and became the first person in the story to accept his message.
Trouble soon followed. After Paul freed an enslaved girl from a spirit, her angry owners dragged Paul and Silas before the authorities. Officials beat them and locked them in prison. That night, an earthquake opened the prison doors. Before morning, the jailer and his family had joined the growing community of believers.
This relief map shows the mountainous land surrounding Philippi, its port at Neapolis, and the Via Egnatia that connected the city with the wider Roman world.
