Description
Corinth in Acts 18: The Gospel in a Tough, Influential City
Acts chapter 18 brings Paul to Corinth, one of the most influential—and morally complicated—cities in the Roman world. Corinth sat on a narrow strip of land between two seas, making it a major crossroads for trade, ideas, and people. If something caught on in Corinth, it didn’t stay there long.
Paul arrives here after leaving Athens, and he ends up staying far longer than in most cities—about a year and a half. He supports himself by making tents while teaching in the synagogue and later among Gentiles. This long stay suggests how strategic Corinth was for spreading the Christian message.
Geography played a big role. The city controlled two ports—Lechaeum to the west and Cenchreae to the east—linking the Aegean Sea with the Gulf of Corinth. Ships, merchants, sailors, and travelers passed through constantly. Corinth was wealthy, crowded, and famously immoral, which makes the growth of a Christian community here all the more striking.
Acts 18 also records strong opposition. Paul is hauled before the Roman proconsul Gallio, but the case is dismissed, giving Christianity a measure of legal breathing room. That moment matters. It shows how the gospel could survive—and even thrive—inside the Roman system.
This map helps you see why Corinth mattered so much. It wasn’t just another stop. It was a launching point, shaping churches that would influence the wider Mediterranean world.
