When Nineveh Was Warned
Assyria looked unstoppable, but the prophet Nahum reminded Nineveh that even powerful empires can fall. He pointed to the earlier destruction of Thebes in Egypt as proof that no city, no matter how strong, was beyond judgment.
Description
Nahum’s Warning to Nineveh
The Assyrian Empire had conquered vast stretches of the ancient world, including the northern kingdom of Israel. But Nahum delivered a powerful message to Assyrian Nineveh: its strength would not last forever. To make his point, he looked south to Thebes, one of Egypt’s great cities.
Thebes was protected by the Nile River and supported by Egypt, Ethiopia, Libya, and Put. Yet the city was eventually captured by invading armies. Nahum used its downfall as a warning to Nineveh. If Thebes could fall despite its walls, waterways, allies, and military strength, Nineveh could fall too.
This map helps put Nahum’s message into its larger geographical setting. It shows the enormous reach of the Assyrian Empire, the distance between Nineveh and Egypt, and the location of Thebes along the Nile. The geography makes Nahum’s comparison especially powerful: an empire that seemed invincible was still vulnerable to God's judgment.
