Nazareth to Judea, with Mary

Mary Is Pregnant—and Heads for the Hills
Mary had just heard news that would change her life: still unmarried, she would give birth to a boy, “no ordinary man. He will be great. People will call him Son of the Greatest God” (Luke 1:32).
She also learned that her relative Elizabeth—long past the age of having children—was six months pregnant.
So Mary got out of Nazareth and hurried south to the hill country of Judea. Luke never tells us whether she was trying to escape the talk back home or was simply eager to see Elizabeth. He tells us only that she left—and went quickly.
Description
Follow Mary from Nazareth to Judea
A single verse sends Mary on one of the most remarkable journeys in the Christmas story. This 3D Bible map puts Luke 1:39 into the landscape, showing two popular routes she could have taken from Nazareth in Galilee to the hill country of Judea in the south.
The nearly direct hill route ran south through the region of Samaria, past the towns of Sebaste, Sychar, Bethel and Jerusalem—about 70 miles (115 km). The longer river route went east toward the town of Scythopolis. That route followed the Jordan River Valley to Jericho and then climbed toward Jerusalem—about 85 miles (140 km). Travelers might cover roughly 20 miles (32 km) a day, making this a journey of about four days or more.
The map does not pretend to settle which route Mary chose, and Luke never names the town where Zechariah and Elizabeth lived. But the map does show the terrain, distance and travel choices behind the verse—a demanding trip for a young woman carrying news that would change the world.
