After fleeing Egypt, Moses spent years living in Midian as a shepherd. While tending his flock in the wilderness, he came to a mountain where he saw a bush that burned without being consumed. There God called him to return to Egypt and lead the Israelites out of slavery.
Later, after the Exodus, the Israelites gathered at the same mountain. There they received the Ten Commandments and entered into a covenant with God. Mount Sinai became one of the most important places in the Bible because it marked the beginning of Israel’s life as a nation under God's guidance.
The geography raises a fascinating question. The Bible describes the mountain and surrounding wilderness, but it does not identify the location clearly enough for modern scholars to agree on its exact site. Over the centuries, several mountains in the Sinai Peninsula and northwestern Arabia have been proposed as candidates.
