The Mountains of Blessing and Cursing
As the Israelites prepared to enter the Promised Land, Moses gave them a powerful visual reminder of the choices ahead. He instructed them to gather at Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal near Shechem. From Mount Gerizim, the people would hear the blessings connected with obeying God's commands. From Mount Ebal, they would hear the curses associated with turning away from them.
The two mountains stood across from each other, creating a natural setting for this important covenant ceremony. The location near Shechem also carried a long history. Abraham had traveled through this area, and the site was closely connected with the early story of Israel's ancestors.
After crossing the Jordan River and beginning their conquest of Canaan, Joshua followed Moses' instructions. The Israelites gathered at the mountains, where the covenant was publicly reaffirmed. The ceremony made the message clear: entering the Promised Land was not simply about receiving territory. It also meant living as God's covenant people.
The geography makes the story especially memorable. Mount Gerizim rises on the south side of the valley, while Mount Ebal stands to the north, with Shechem between them. This natural amphitheater provided a dramatic setting for Israel to hear the blessings and curses and commit themselves to the covenant.
