Description

Micah and the Divided Kingdoms

Micah was a prophet from Moresheth in Judah who spoke during the 700s BC, when both Israel and Judah were dealing with serious threats. The northern kingdom of Israel had its capital at Samaria, while Judah was centered on Jerusalem. Micah warned both kingdoms about injustice, corruption, and turning away from God.

The geography helps explain the setting of Micah’s message. Israel stretched across the northern highlands, with important places such as Samaria, Shechem, Shiloh, and Jezreel Valley. Judah occupied the southern part of the land, with Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Hebron, and other cities scattered across its hill country.

The map also shows the surrounding nations that influenced the region. Syria lay northeast of Israel, while Ammon and Moab occupied territory east of the Jordan River. Farther south were Edom and the desert regions leading toward Egypt. These neighboring kingdoms, along with the growing power of Assyria, shaped the political world in which Micah preached.

Micah’s message was both a warning and a promise. He confronted leaders who took advantage of the poor and warned that judgment was coming, but he also looked forward to restoration and a future ruler from Bethlehem. Seeing the places Micah knew helps bring his powerful message to life and shows how closely his prophecy was connected to the land of Israel and Judah.
