Merry Christmas to the Poor isn’t Jingle Bells or Hark the Herald Angels Sing. It’s a Christmas protest song about the way some of us ignore, exploit, kidnap, and expel the poor among us.
We build walls between us and them…socially and, in my shamed country, physically.
- We push them away. Jesus pulled them in.
- We live in communities apart from them. Jesus was born among them and lived with them.
- Some of us refuse to help the poor and say they would rather not give them anything.
Jesus gave them everything.
This song reminds us that when we ignore, abuse, and refuse to help the poor, we ignore the heritage of Jesus Christ himself, a heritage that began in a feeding trough in some kind stranger’s barn.
We call ourselves Christian but seem to know nothing about what was most important to Christ.
This song has just one main message: Remember Bethlehem.
