This detailed Bible map sets that terrifying vision against the Mediterranean world familiar to Revelation’s first readers. It shows the boundaries of the Roman Empire along with modern countries, major bodies of water, and three important biblical cities: Rome, Ephesus, and Jerusalem.
The combination of ancient boundaries and modern geography helps readers understand the enormous area controlled by Rome and the importance of Mediterranean shipping to the empire. A disaster destroying one-third of the ships at sea would have devastated transportation, trade, food supplies, and Roman military power.
Revelation does not identify exactly where the burning object strikes. This map provides geographic context for considering John’s prophecy without claiming more than the passage reveals.
