Jacob’s Family Travels to the Land of Goshen
Jacob had spent most of his life in Canaan, but a severe drought made it difficult for his large family to find enough food. His son Joseph was living in Egypt and had become an important leader there. Joseph invited his father, brothers, and their families to come to Egypt, where they could survive the famine.
This map traces the journey from Jacob’s home near Hebron to the land of Goshen in Egypt. The route begins in Canaan and heads south through the dry wilderness areas near Kadesh oasis. From there, Jacob’s family could have followed a desert route or a route closer to the Mediterranean coast before reaching the Nile River Delta.
Goshen was in the northeastern part of Egypt, near the Nile River Delta. It was a good place for Jacob’s family because they were shepherds with large herds of animals. The area provided access to water and grazing land while also giving the family some separation from the main Egyptian population.
For someone new to the Bible, this is an important part of the story because Jacob’s family eventually becomes the nation of Israel. The family does not stay in Egypt forever, but their move to Goshen sets up the events that come later in the Bible, including the story of Moses and the Exodus.
