Story Behind the Map

The Bible says Solomon married hundreds of wives and kept hundreds more concubines, many from nations surrounding Israel. Among them were women from Egypt, Moab, Ammon, Edom, Sidon (Phoenicia), and Hittite territory. These marriages were often political agreements that secured peace, trade, and diplomatic ties between kingdoms.

This map shows where many of Solomon's foreign wives likely came from, stretching across the eastern Mediterranean and the lands surrounding Israel. It illustrates how Jerusalem became an international capital that attracted royalty and diplomats from many cultures. Solomon's growing influence fulfilled God's promise to give Israel peace and prosperity, but it also created new spiritual dangers.

Later in life, Solomon's wives persuaded him to worship their gods alongside the Lord. He built shrines for foreign deities on the hills around Jerusalem, directly violating God's commands. The compromise had lasting consequences. After Solomon died, the united kingdom split into the rival nations of Israel and Judah, making this one of the turning points in the Bible's story.
