Joseph Finds His Brothers at Dothan
Joseph’s father, Jacob, is worried about his older sons and their flocks. He sends Joseph from their home near Hebron to check on them and bring back word about how they are doing.
The journey takes Joseph north toward Shechem and then farther to Dothan. The map highlights both places and shows the surrounding geography of Canaan, including the Jordan River, Gilead, the Sea of Galilee, and the Mediterranean Sea.
When Joseph finally finds his brothers at Dothan, things take a terrible turn. His brothers see him coming and decide to get rid of him. They take his special robe, throw him into a pit, and eventually sell him to traveling merchants.
The map also shows a possible route for the Midianite merchants who were traveling south toward Egypt. Their journey connected Joseph’s story in Canaan with the next major chapter of his life in Egypt.
The geography helps make the story easier to picture. Joseph traveled away from Hebron, searching for his brothers, only to be carried even farther from home. From Dothan, his path would eventually lead toward Egypt and a completely different life.
