Description

From Gath Hepher to Nineveh

Jonah was a prophet from Gath Hepher in the northern kingdom of Israel during the 700s BC. God sent him to Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, to warn its people to turn away from their wickedness. Instead, Jonah initially headed in the opposite direction, traveling to Joppa on the Mediterranean coast and trying to escape by sea.

After God turned Jonah around, the prophet eventually traveled toward Nineveh. The route shown on the map crosses the northern regions of the ancient Near East, passing through areas around Damascus, Carchemish, and Haran before reaching Nineveh on the Tigris River. The journey covered a huge distance compared with the relatively small land of Israel.

The geography helps explain why Jonah was so reluctant to go. Nineveh was not simply another nearby city. It was the capital of the powerful Assyrian Empire, located deep in Mesopotamia. Assyria would later become a major threat to Israel, making Jonah’s mission to its capital even more surprising.

Jonah’s journey shows that God’s concern extended far beyond Israel. From Gath Hepher to Joppa and across the ancient roads to Nineveh, the map puts the prophet’s famous story into its larger geographical setting and helps explain the enormous distance Jonah was asked to travel.
