Description

Back to Galilee After the Resurrection

Matthew 28 records the angel’s message at the empty tomb and Jesus’ instruction to his followers: go to Galilee, where they would see him. That command sent the disciples away from Jerusalem and back toward the region where much of Jesus’ ministry had begun.

The journey from Jerusalem to Galilee was not a quick walk across town. Travelers could take different routes north, including roads through the hill country of Samaria or paths down through Jericho and the Jordan River Valley before climbing back toward Galilee.

Galilee mattered deeply in Matthew’s Gospel. It was the region of Capernaum, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, and many of Jesus’ teachings and miracles. Returning there after the resurrection connected the end of the story with the beginning of the disciples’ call.

This map helps Bible readers visualize the distance, terrain, and possible routes involved when Jesus told his disciples to go back to Galilee.
