Zerubbabel Rebuilds Jerusalem’s Temple
Jerusalem was still recovering from exile when Zerubbabel began rebuilding the Temple. The prophet Zechariah received a powerful message that Zerubbabel, who had laid the Temple’s foundation, would also finish the work.
Description
The Temple Rises Again in Jerusalem
After the people of Judah returned from exile in Babylon, they faced the enormous task of rebuilding Jerusalem and its Temple. Zerubbabel was the governor of Judah and played a leading role in restoring the Temple, while Zechariah encouraged the people to keep going when the work became difficult.
In Zechariah’s vision, an angel tells the prophet that Zerubbabel will finish what he started. The message was a reminder that the Temple would be completed—not simply through human strength, but with God’s help.
The geography of Jerusalem helps put the story into perspective. The Temple stood on the Temple Mount, high above the Kidron Valley and near the City of David and Gihon Spring. The surrounding Judean Hills made Jerusalem a naturally elevated and defensible city, while the Mount of Olives rose just to the east.
This map gives a three-dimensional view of Jerusalem and the places connected with the rebuilding of the Temple. It helps show where Zerubbabel’s work took place and why the restoration of the Temple was such an important part of life after the exile.
