Why Jerusalem Was So Hard to Conquer
Jerusalem was built for defense. The ancient city sat along a narrow ridge with steep valleys dropping away on several sides. That high ground forced invading armies to climb toward the walls while defenders looked down from above. A City Shaped by Its Hills and Valleys
Jerusalem’s location explains a lot about the stories that unfolded there. The oldest city grew along the ridge of the City of David, with the Temple Mount rising to the north. The Kidron Valley dropped sharply along the east side of the city, while the Hinnom Valley helped protect Jerusalem from the south and west.
Those steep slopes gave Jerusalem a natural advantage in war. An attacking army could surround the city, but getting inside was another matter. Soldiers had to move uphill toward fortified walls and gates while hauling weapons, supplies, timber, and water behind them. Long sieges became part of Jerusalem’s story because the geography itself worked in favor of the defenders.
The hills also affected everyday life. Water was precious, roads had to follow the terrain, and homes and walls were built along slopes and terraces. Even familiar Bible language makes more sense when you see the land. People regularly talked about “going up to Jerusalem” because travelers really did climb toward the city.
This map puts that geography in front of the reader. It shows Jerusalem not simply as a name on a page, but as a hilltop city surrounded by valleys—a place whose landscape helped shape its history, its defenses, and many of the Bible stories connected with it.
