Jesus, on the last week of his ministry, came to Jerusalem knowing what he was walking into. The city rose from the Judean hills, protected by deep valleys and dominated by Herod’s enormous Temple complex. Crowds poured through its gates for Passover. Priests served at the Temple. Roman soldiers watched anxiously from nearby, knowing holidays like this could erupt into rebellion. During his last week, Jesus would teach here, confront religious leaders, eat his final meal with his disciples, get arrested, condemned, and crucified outside the city walls.

See the Jerusalem Behind the Story of Jesus
This reconstructed view shows Jerusalem as it may have appeared around the time of Jesus, set within the rugged terrain that shaped the city and its history. The Temple Mount dominates the eastern side of Jerusalem, while the City of David stretches south along a narrow ridge. The Kidron Valley separates the city from the Mount of Olives, and the Hinnom Valley curves around the south and west.
Terraced hillsides, farmland, olive groves, roads, walls, and surrounding ridges help put familiar New Testament events into geographic context. The reconstruction is based on archaeological interpretations of Herodian Jerusalem combined with modern elevation data. Some details remain uncertain, but the map offers a historically informed way to see the city where many of the Gospel story’s final and most important events took place.
Historical note
About the reconstruction
No surviving image shows exactly how Jerusalem looked in the first century. Romans devastated the city in AD 70, and centuries of rebuilding have further altered the landscape. This illustration combines modern terrain data with archaeological reconstructions of Herodian Jerusalem to provide an approximate view of the city and its setting around the time of Jesus.
