Jericho Road From Jerusalem to Bethany

The Road From Jerusalem to Jericho

Jerusalem sits high in the hills, while Jericho lies far below in the Jordan River Valley. This dramatic elevation change helps explain why the ancient road between the two cities was steep, winding, and difficult to travel. It was also the route Jesus and his followers traveled as they moved between Jerusalem and the villages nearby.

Description

A Steep Road Through the Hills

Traveling from Jerusalem toward Jericho meant making a dramatic descent from the highlands of Judah to the lowlands near the Jordan River. Jerusalem stood about 2,428 feet (743 meters) above sea level, while Jericho was about 846 feet (258 meters) below sea level. The difference in elevation made the journey a long and winding trip through rugged terrain.

The map traces the Jericho Road as it winds through the hills and valleys east of Jerusalem. Along the way, the route passes near Bethany, the village associated with Lazarus and his sisters Mary and Martha. The Kidron Valley and the Mount of Olives also form important parts of the landscape around Jerusalem.

This geography adds meaning to several Gospel stories. When Jesus traveled between Jerusalem and the communities east of the city, he was moving through a landscape of steep slopes, rocky valleys, and dramatic changes in elevation. Seeing the actual terrain helps make these journeys feel less like simple trips on a map and more like demanding journeys through the Judean hills.
