Map Description

This map centers on Ramoth-gilead, the strategic fortress east of the Jordan River where Jehu was serving as an army commander. While Israel defended the city against Syria, the prophet Elisha sent a messenger to anoint Jehu as Israel’s next king (2 Kings 9:1-13). The ceremony was carried out in private, but the news quickly spread among the officers, who immediately declared Jehu king.

From Ramoth-gilead, Jehu launched a swift march west across the Jordan Valley toward Jezreel. There he confronted King Joram of Israel, Queen Jezebel, and the entire house of Ahab, fulfilling prophecies God had spoken years earlier through Elijah. Jehu’s actions dramatically reshaped Israel’s political and spiritual future.

The geography reveals why Ramoth-gilead mattered so much. Located on Israel’s eastern frontier, the city guarded important trade routes and served as a military stronghold against repeated attacks from Aram (Syria). This map shows the setting where one of the Bible’s most dramatic transfers of royal power began.
