Jacob’s Long Journey North
Jacob’s journey began in Canaan after he left his family home near Beersheba. He traveled north through the land of Canaan and continued toward Paddan-Aram, the region associated with his relatives. Genesis 29:1 describes Jacob continuing his journey until he reached the land where his relatives had migrated from the east.
The map traces a possible route from Beersheba through places such as Hebron, Jerusalem, Bethel, Shechem, Damascus, and Hamat before reaching Haran. The route covers about 550 miles (885 km), giving a better sense of just how far Jacob traveled.
Jacob eventually reached Haran, where he met Rachel and became part of the household of her father, Laban. His time in Paddan-Aram would shape the next major chapter of his life. He would marry Leah and Rachel, have children who would become the ancestors of the tribes of Israel, and eventually begin the journey back to Canaan.
Geography adds another layer to Jacob’s story. The route passes through different landscapes, including the mountains of Lebanon, the region around the Sea of Galilee, and areas near the Euphrates River. Seeing these places on a map makes Jacob’s long journey from southern Canaan to Haran easier to picture.
