Joseph’s Body Returns to Canaan

Joseph spent most of his life in Egypt, rising from a foreign slave to a powerful leader under Pharaoh. But even after living in Egypt for many years, Joseph never forgot the promise God had made to his family. Before his death, Joseph made his family promise that they would take his bones with them when God eventually brought the Israelites out of Egypt.
That promise became part of the story when Joseph died. His body was embalmed in Egypt, a common Egyptian practice that preserved the body for burial. The map traces the long journey from Egypt toward Canaan, showing the route from the Nile River Delta and Goshen toward Hebron.
The journey covered about 200 miles and crossed a landscape that changed dramatically along the way. The travelers moved from the fertile Nile Delta through the dry wilderness areas of the Sinai region and toward the hill country of Canaan. The map highlights the Wilderness of Shur and Wilderness of Zin, as well as the Negev badlands.
The destination was Hebron, where Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob, and Leah were associated with the family burial place. For Joseph, being buried there connected him with the generations that came before him and with the land God had promised to his family.
