Jacob’s Journey from Canaan to Goshen
Jacob had spent much of his life in the land of Canaan, but a severe drought threatened his family and their livestock. When Jacob learned that there was food in Egypt and that his son Joseph was alive there, he gathered his household and prepared to make the long journey south.
The map traces a possible route from Jacob’s camp near Hebron and Beersheba toward Egypt. From Beersheba, the route crosses the Negev badlands and passes near Kadesh oasis before continuing through the wilderness regions of Zin, Shur, and Paran. The journey covers about 200 miles, or 360 kilometers, depending on whether the travelers followed a coastal or desert route.
Jacob’s family eventually reaches the Nile River Delta and settles in the region of Goshen. The map also identifies Avaris, an important ancient settlement in the eastern Nile Delta, along with Memphis farther south. Goshen’s location near the edge of Egypt gave Jacob’s family room for their livestock while keeping them somewhat separate from Egypt’s main population centers.
This journey is a major turning point in the story of Israel’s founding family. Jacob’s move to Egypt begins a new chapter for his descendants. What starts as a response to famine eventually becomes the setting for the growth of the family into the people of Israel.
