Map Description
This map highlights Jerusalem during the reign of King Hezekiah in the late eighth century BC. As Assyria conquered nation after nation, Hezekiah enlarged the city's defenses to protect thousands of refugees fleeing from the fallen northern kingdom of Israel. The expanded walls enclosed more of Jerusalem, including areas west of the original City of David.
One of Hezekiah's greatest engineering achievements was digging a tunnel through solid rock to redirect water from the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Siloam inside the city's walls (2 Kings 20:20; 2 Chronicles 32:2-4, 30). This ensured Jerusalem would have a reliable water supply even while under siege.
The geography tells an important part of the story. The steep Kidron and Hinnom valleys formed natural defenses, while the Temple stood on Mount Zion above the City of David. Together, the city's walls, terrain, and hidden water system helped Jerusalem survive the Assyrian invasion under King Sennacherib, making Hezekiah's preparations one of the Bible's greatest examples of wise leadership.
