Why This Journey Matters
Near the end of Genesis, a severe drought struck the land of Canaan. Jacob and his family faced a difficult choice: stay and struggle, or move to Egypt where Joseph had become one of Pharaoh’s most powerful officials.
Pharaoh welcomed Joseph’s relatives and offered them the rich grazing lands of Goshen in the Nile River Delta. What began as a rescue mission for one family soon became the story of an entire nation. Jacob’s descendants multiplied in Egypt and lived there for more than four hundred years before the events of Exodus and the rise of Moses.
The geography helps explain why Goshen was so important. Located in the fertile Nile Delta, it offered dependable water, productive farmland, and good pasture for livestock. In contrast, much of the land between Canaan and Egypt was dry wilderness, making the journey a significant undertaking.
This map traces the route from Hebron through the southern wilderness to Goshen. Seeing the distance and terrain helps bring the story to life. It shows how God preserved Jacob’s family during a crisis and how their move to Egypt prepared the way for one of the Bible’s greatest stories of rescue and freedom.
