Israel’s Return to the Land
The people of Judah had been scattered far from home after the Babylonian exile. But the prophets spoke of a different future. Zechariah promised that God would gather his people from distant countries and bring them back to the land of Israel, where they could raise their families and rebuild their lives.
The geography makes the promise easier to picture. Gilead lay east of the Jordan River, while Bashan stretched farther north and Lebanon rose along the Mediterranean coast. These were rugged regions separated by mountains, valleys, and the Jordan River Valley. Zechariah's words describe people returning until the land is overflowing with them.
The map also connects the northern landscape with Galilee and the Sea of Galilee. Places such as Tyre, Sidon, and Beirut along the Mediterranean coast show just how broad the region was. The mountains of Lebanon and Mount Hermon formed dramatic landmarks north of Israel.
For people who had spent generations away from their homeland, coming home meant much more than returning to a location. It meant restoration, family, identity, and hope. Zechariah's picture of people filling Gilead and Lebanon shows the promise that exile would not be the end of their story.
