Description

From Egypt Into the Wilderness

After Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, they entered a vast and unfamiliar wilderness. The journey was difficult, and the people quickly discovered that freedom from Egypt did not mean an easy road ahead. Water was especially important in the dry desert, and the Israelites became frustrated when they could not find enough to drink.

The map follows a possible route from the Nile River Delta and the region of Goshen toward Mount Sinai. Along the way, it marks several locations mentioned in or associated with the Exodus story, including the Shur Desert, Marah, Elim, the Wilderness of Sin, and Rephidim. Some of these locations are uncertain, which is why the map labels several of them with question marks

Eventually, the route reaches Mount Sinai, where the Israelites would spend a significant amount of time. The mountain became one of the most important places in the Exodus story because it was there that God gave Moses the commandments and established His covenant with Israel.

The map also helps put the Israelites’ journey into perspective. What can seem like a short trip when reading the story is actually a journey across a huge and challenging landscape. The deserts, mountains, and limited sources of water help explain why the Israelites repeatedly struggled with thirst and why their journey required trust and dependence on God.
