Ephesus in Paul's Day
$10.00
The Ephesus Paul wrote and visited
Ephesus stood near the Aegean coast in what is now western Turkey. In Paul’s day, ships could reach the city through a harbor and channel connecting it with the sea. That access helped make Ephesus one of the region’s busiest and most influential cities. This downloadable Bible map shows the city, its harbor, the Cayster River valley, and the changing coastline that eventually left the ruins several miles inland.
Description
The Ephesus Paul wrote and visited
Paul did not write to an isolated little church in a forgotten town. He wrote to believers living in one of the most important cities of the Roman world.
Ephesus stood along major land and sea routes in western Asia Minor. Ships brought travelers, merchants, ideas, religions—and eventually Christian teachers—to its busy harbor. From this strategic city, the news about Jesus spread throughout the surrounding province.
A City Connected to the Sea
In Paul’s time, a harbor basin and channel connected Ephesus with the Aegean Sea. The city’s location helped make it prosperous, crowded, diverse, and influential. It also made Ephesus an ideal center for Paul’s ministry.
The city appears repeatedly in the New Testament. Paul visited Ephesus, taught there for an extended period, and developed close relationships with its believers. The city is especially important in Acts, Ephesians, and Revelation.
The Coastline Kept Moving
The coastline visitors see today is not the coastline Paul knew. Over the centuries, sediment carried by the Cayster River accumulated around the harbor and channel. The coastal plain gradually stretched farther west, leaving Ephesus separated from the sea.
This close-up map helps readers see both the city’s importance in the first century and the geographical changes that transformed it afterward.
