Description

From Philistine Territory to Laish

The book of Judges tells how the tribe of Dan struggled to settle in its allotted territory. The Danites lived near Philistine cities such as Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath, but they were unable to take full control of the area. Looking for a new place to live, five Danite scouts traveled north in search of a better location.

Their journey eventually led them to Laish, a quiet and isolated city near the northern end of Israel, close to Mt. Hermon. The Danites saw that the city was vulnerable, returned with an armed force, captured it, and renamed it Dan. The city became an important northern landmark in Israel.

This map helps show the dramatic distance the Danites traveled—from the central hill country near Zorah and Eshtaol, through territory near the Philistine cities, all the way north to Laish. The geography makes the story in Judges 18 easier to understand and shows why Dan became associated with the northernmost part of Israel.
