Paul and Titus Had Work to Finish in Crete
One man, one long island and a lot of unfinished work
Crete can look like a little speck on a Bible map. It wasn’t little to Titus.
The rugged island stretches roughly 160 miles (260 km) from east to west. Its towns were scattered along the coast and tucked among mountains and valleys. Paul had left Titus there with a job that could keep a man’s sandals dusty for quite a while.
“I left you in Crete to finish the job we started,” Paul told him. Titus needed to help the new Christian communities get organized and appoint trustworthy church leaders in every town Paul had told him to target.
The Bible doesn’t give us the itinerary Paul and Titus followed on Crete. We don’t know where they landed, which towns they visited or how long they stayed. But Paul’s short instruction tells us that their work had spread across the island—and that a good deal of it still needed attention.
Crete in Paul’s wider world
This map pulls back to show Crete in relation to Greece and several cities connected with Paul’s ministry, including Corinth, Athens, Thessalonica and Philippi.
It also identifies Fair Havens and Phoenix, two Cretan harbors from Paul’s dangerous voyage to Rome. Years earlier, the crew of Paul’s ship had tried to sail from Fair Havens to the better winter harbor at Phoenix. They never made it. A violent wind swept the ship away from Crete and out into the Mediterranean.
Nicopolis appears in the upper-left corner for another reason. Near the end of his letter, Paul told Titus to leave Crete and join him there for the winter.
The map helps readers see Titus’s assignment for what it was: not a quick visit to one church, but an island-wide job that Paul trusted him to finish.
